Second Boeing 777 enters fleet

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has welcomed its second Boeing 777 aircraft, acquired on a wet lease from Turkish Airlines. The widebody plane adds capacity on the airline’s network to Turkey, accommodating up to 400 passengers in a two-class configuration.

IndiGo already flies a 777 between Delhi and Istanbul, and the second aircraft will connect Mumbai with Istanbul from May 17th. Pieter Elbers, Chief Executive Officer, IndiGo, commented,

Widebody ambitions

IndiGo seems to be warming up to the idea of widebody operations. The two 777s, although wet-leased, are allowing the carrier to get a sense of what it is like to operate a large aircraft. With a firm grasp on India’s domestic market, IndiGo now wants to expand its international reach beyond medium-haul routes in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.
